- Worn out. Repeated washing and wear degrades elastane, and old leggings thin out permanently.
What is the squat test?
Put the leggings on, face a mirror, and squat down fully. If you can see skin or underwear colour through the fabric, they are see-through.
Do this in bright light, and check from behind with a second mirror or a photo. Standing still tells you nothing. The problem only appears under stretch, which is precisely when you are most visible.

How do you choose leggings that are not see-through?
Choose a heavier fabric weight and buy your correct size. Practical guidance:
- Do not size down. Tight leggings are more transparent, not more flattering. Size down and you make the problem worse.
- Look for thicker fabric. Higher fabric weight means more opacity. Very cheap, very light leggings are almost always a problem.
- Avoid light colours. Grey, beige and pastel leggings are far more transparent than black. If in doubt, buy black.
- Check for a gusset. A properly constructed gusset panel adds material where it is most needed.
