For running and high-impact exercise, wear a dedicated sports bra. For yoga, walking, pilates and light gym work, a supportive wireless bra is comfortable and sufficient.
Part of our complete guide to bras.
Being straightforward about this: Erblis does not currently make sports bras, and we would rather tell you what actually works than pretend otherwise. If you run, buy a proper sports bra. For everything gentler, read on.
What kind of bra do you need for exercise?
Match the bra to the impact level, not to the activity's name. The question is how much movement there is.
- High impact (running, HIIT, skipping, aerobics): a dedicated encapsulation or compression sports bra. Nothing else is adequate.
- Medium impact (cycling, brisk walking, weights): a firm sports bra or a very supportive wireless bra.
- Low impact (yoga, pilates, stretching, light gym): a soft, supportive wireless bra is comfortable and does the job.
Why should you not run in a regular bra?
A regular bra does not control vertical movement, and underwire can chafe badly during repetitive impact. This is a comfort and tissue-strain issue, not a minor preference.
An everyday bra is built to shape and support at rest. It is not built to absorb repeated impact. If you run regularly, a sports bra is the single most worthwhile piece of kit you can buy.
What bra works for yoga and low-impact workouts?
A soft wireless bra with a stretchy band and wide straps. For yoga, pilates and stretching there is minimal impact, so the priority shifts entirely to comfort and freedom of movement.
What you want:
- No underwire, which digs in during floor work and twists
- A stretchy band that moves with your breathing
- Wide straps that do not cut into the shoulders
- Breathable fabric
Our Blossom Beauty ultra-light wireless bra works well for low-impact sessions: no wire, soft band, and light enough not to overheat.
What should you wear under gym clothes?
Seamless underwear with a cotton gusset, in a moisture-friendly fabric. Gym leggings are the most unforgiving garment there is for visible panty lines.
Seamless is the only real answer. Our Smooth Operator seamless thongs disappear completely under leggings. See how to stop visible panty lines.
How do you avoid chafing when working out in Karachi heat?
Choose seamless, correctly-sized underwear and change immediately afterwards. Heat plus sweat plus friction is what causes chafing, and damp skin rubs rather than glides.
- Seamless - fewer seams means fewer friction points
- Correct size - anything too tight increases rubbing
- Change straight after - sitting in damp gym underwear is the main cause of irritation
See how to stop inner-thigh chafing and underwear for humidity, which cover the same problem.
What do you wear to and from the gym?
A co-ord set works well, because it looks intentional and is comfortable in the car. Our Playful Contour set has a fitted, stretchy cut that suits the walk to and from a gym.
