Good shapewear removes the small ridges and lines that fitted fabric reveals: a waistband edge, a soft area at the hip, the line of underwear. That is a realistic goal. Squeezing yourself two sizes smaller is not.
How much compression do you need?
Match the compression level to the outfit. There are broadly three levels.
- Light smoothing for everyday fitted clothes. Comfortable enough to wear all day.
- Medium control for a fitted dress or a special outfit worn for a few hours.
- Firm control for a very fitted occasion outfit, worn for a limited time. Firm shapewear is not comfortable for a long day.
