Nighty Guide: Styles, Fabrics and How to Choose One

by Erblis on Oct 31, 2026

A nighty is a one-piece nightdress — a single loose garment worn for sleeping, as opposed to a two-piece night suit. The main styles are the full-length maxi, the knee-length classic, the short babydoll, the kaftan and the slip nighty. Cotton suits Pakistan's heat best; satin and modal are cooler than they look; and the single most common mistake is buying one too short to sleep comfortably in.

Nighty is the most widely used word for nightwear in Pakistan — more common than nightdress, nightgown or night suit. This guide covers every style, which fabric to choose for the climate, and how to get the fit right.

Part of our complete guide to loungewear and nightwear in Pakistan.

What is a nighty?

A nighty is a loose, one-piece dress made for sleeping. It has no separate bottom half, which is the whole distinction between a nighty and a night suit.

Because there is no waistband, nothing digs in when you turn over, and air moves freely — which is why nighties remain the default sleepwear in hot climates. The trade-off is coverage: a night suit covers your legs, so it is the better choice if you answer the door or share space with family.

Types of nighty

Style Length Best for
Maxi nighty Ankle Coverage, cooler nights, modesty at home
Classic / midi Knee to mid-calf The everyday default
Short nighty Mid-thigh Peak summer heat
Babydoll Short, flared from the bust Occasion wear rather than sleep
Kaftan nighty Ankle, very loose Maximum airflow, no cling
Slip nighty Knee, close-cut Satin or silk, lighter feel

The maxi nighty

Full-length and loose. The most practical choice if you want to be covered around the house, and the warmest option for winter nights. In cotton it stays breathable despite the length.

The classic knee-length nighty

The version most people picture. Long enough to be decent, short enough not to tangle. If you are buying one nighty, buy this.

The short nighty

Mid-thigh, for the hottest weeks. Comfortable to sleep in, less practical for anything else.

The babydoll

Short and flared from an empire line under the bust, usually in satin or lace. This is occasion nightwear rather than something to sleep in regularly — the flare rides up.

The kaftan nighty

Very loose and full-length, with wide sleeves. The coolest cut there is, because nothing touches the skin closely. Well suited to a Karachi summer.

The slip nighty

Close-cut with thin straps, usually satin or silk. Light and cool, though the narrow cut means less airflow than a kaftan.

Which fabric is best for a nighty in Pakistan?

Cotton for most of the year, modal if you want softer, satin for a dressier option, and avoid polyester for summer.

  • Cotton — the most breathable and the safest default. Absorbs sweat, though it stays damp in high humidity.
  • Modal and bamboo blends — softer than cotton, better at shedding moisture, and noticeably cooler through a humid Karachi night.
  • Satin — cooler against the skin than it looks, drapes well, needs gentler washing. Good for a dressier nighty.
  • Silk — the most luxurious and the most demanding to care for.
  • Polyester — cheap and widely sold, but it traps heat and sweat. The one to avoid for summer sleeping.

How do you choose the right size and length?

Size up rather than down. A nighty should hang loose — anything that follows your shape defeats the point, because airflow is what makes it comfortable.

On length: sit down in it before deciding. A nighty that looks fine standing can ride up uncomfortably once you are in bed. Knee-length is the safest buy if you are unsure.

Check the shoulder and armhole too. A nighty that is loose at the body but tight at the armhole will bind every time you turn over.

What should you look for when buying?

  • Fabric weight — hold it up to the light. Thin fabric is see-through, and cheap nighties are thin because thin is cheap.
  • Seam finish — overlocked seams at the armhole and side. A single line of stitching will fail.
  • Colourfastness — the most common complaint with cheap printed nighties is dye bleeding in the first wash.
  • Sleeve and neckline — decide what you need before you shop. Sleeveless for summer, short sleeves year-round, long sleeves for winter.

What does a nighty cost in Pakistan?

Roughly the same tiers as night suits: around Rs. 600–1,100 on marketplaces, Rs. 1,200–2,500 from established brands, and Rs. 2,500 upwards for satin, modal and premium cotton. The jump from the cheapest tier to the middle one is the one worth paying for.

How do you care for a nighty?

Wash cool, turn prints inside out, and never tumble dry — heat fades colour and weakens the fabric. Dry cotton in sunlight and satin in shade. See how to care for nightwear so it lasts.

Does Erblis make nighties?

Not one-piece nighties, and we would rather say so. Our sleepwear range is two-piece night suits and loungewear sets — the Satin Symphony satin set, and three-piece sets like Plush Reverie that cover warm and cool nights.

If a one-piece nighty is specifically what you want, the marketplaces and established Pakistani brands carry far more choice than we do. If a night suit would suit you equally, browse our loungewear and nightwear — free Karachi delivery, Cash on Delivery, and WELCOME10 for 10% off a first order.

Frequently asked questions

What is a nighty?

A nighty is a one-piece nightdress worn for sleeping. Unlike a night suit, it has no separate bottom half, which makes it cooler and less restrictive.

What is the difference between a nighty and a night suit?

A nighty is one piece; a night suit is a matching top and bottom. The nighty is cooler to sleep in, while the night suit covers more and can be worn around the house.

Which nighty fabric is best for Pakistan?

Cotton for everyday breathability, modal or bamboo for the hottest months, satin for a dressier option. Avoid polyester in summer — it traps heat and sweat.

What length of nighty should I buy?

Knee-length is the most practical default. Maxi for coverage and cooler nights, short for peak summer. Sit down in it before deciding, since a nighty that fits standing can ride up in bed.

Should a nighty be loose or fitted?

Loose. Airflow is what makes a nighty comfortable, so size up rather than down and check the armhole is not tight.

How many nighties should I own?

Three or four for regular wear, so each dries properly between washes. Add a warmer long-sleeved one for winter if you are north of Karachi.
