A plunge bra has a very low centre panel between the cups, which keeps it hidden under a deep V or wrap neckline while bringing the bust together. A balcony bra — also called a balconette — has a low, horizontal cup line with wide-set straps, which lifts the bust from below and squares off the top under wide and boat necklines. The plunge works vertically; the balcony works horizontally.
Both are lower-cut than an everyday bra, which is why they get confused. The difference is the direction of the cut, and it determines which neckline each one hides under.
Part of our guide to the 15 types of bras.
Balcony or balconette — is there a difference?
No. They are the same bra. "Balcony bra" is the common British term and "balconette" the more international one. If a shop lists both, they are describing the same cut.
Plunge vs balcony at a glance
| Plunge | Balcony / balconette | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it is cut low | The centre, between the cups | The top of the cup, straight across |
| Straps | Standard placement | Wide-set, near the shoulder |
| What it does to the bust | Pushes inward, creates cleavage | Lifts from below, squares the top |
| Best under | Deep V, wrap, low scoop | Square, boat and wide necklines |
| Support | Less, because the centre is low | More, because the band does the work |
What is the difference between a plunge and a balcony bra?
The plunge drops the centre gore; the balcony drops the top edge of the cup.
The gore is the small panel sitting between the two cups against your sternum. On a plunge it is cut almost to nothing, so the bra disappears under a neckline that dips low at the front. The cups angle inward, pushing the bust together.
A balcony leaves the gore at normal height but cuts the cup low and flat across the top, like a shelf. The straps move outward to the edge of the shoulder. The bust is lifted rather than gathered, and the resulting shape is squared rather than rounded.
Which neckline needs which?
- Deep V, wrap, surplice, low scoop — plunge. Anything that dips at the centre front.
- Square neck, boat neck, wide scoop, off-shoulder tops with wide straps — balcony. Anything that exposes the inner shoulder.
- Both at once — a low, wide neckline needs a plunge balconette, which exists and combines the two cuts.

Which gives more support?
The balcony, generally. Its higher centre gore anchors the bra against the sternum, and the band does more of the work.
A plunge sacrifices some structure for the sake of the neckline — the low centre means less to hold the cups in position. On a fuller bust that trade-off is noticeable, so look for a plunge with a slightly higher gore if support matters. See best bras for a bigger bust.
Which gives more cleavage?
The plunge. Angled cups push the bust inward and together, which is what creates a visible centre line.
A balcony pushes upward instead, so it creates fullness at the top of the bust rather than depth between. Many people prefer that shape; it is simply a different effect.
Which suits your bust?
A smaller bust gets easy shape from either — the plunge for cleavage, the balcony for a fuller top line. A fuller bust is usually better served by the balcony, because the higher gore and firmer band hold more securely; a very low plunge can struggle.
Deeper detail on each: the plunge bra and the balconette bra.
Which should you own?
Neither, before you own a t-shirt bra and a comfortable wireless one. Both of these are neckline solutions rather than everyday bras.
Buy whichever matches the clothes already in your wardrobe. If you wear V-necks and wrap tops, buy the plunge. If you wear square and boat necks, buy the balcony. If you cannot decide, a convertible bra covers several necklines with one piece — our Radiant Allure converts to strapless, halter and cross-back.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a plunge and a balcony bra?
A plunge is cut low at the centre, between the cups, for deep V necklines. A balcony is cut low straight across the top of the cup with wide-set straps, for square and boat necklines.
Is a balcony bra the same as a balconette?
Yes. They are two names for the same cut — "balcony" is the British term, "balconette" the more international one.
Which is more supportive, plunge or balconette?
The balconette, usually. Its higher centre gore anchors the bra better, while a plunge trades some structure for the low neckline.
Can you wear a plunge bra every day?
You can, but it is designed around a neckline rather than around daily comfort. A t-shirt bra or wireless bra is the better everyday default.
What is a plunge balconette?
A bra that combines both cuts — a low centre gore and a low horizontal cup with wide straps. It suits necklines that are both deep and wide.
