Thermal innerwear is a close-fitting base layer — usually a long-sleeve top and leggings — worn under your normal clothes to trap warmth without bulk. In Karachi you rarely need full thermals; in Islamabad, Lahore in January, or the north, they make a real difference. Here is how to judge and how to layer.
This guide is part of our complete guide to loungewear and nightwear in Pakistan.
What is thermal innerwear?
A thin, close-fitting base layer worn next to the skin to retain body heat. Thermals work by trapping a layer of warm air rather than by being thick.
The usual set is a long-sleeve top and matching leggings, slim enough to wear invisibly under a kurta, shalwar or trousers. The point is warmth without looking padded.
Do you actually need thermals in Pakistan?
It depends entirely on where you are. Being honest about this saves money.
- Karachi: rarely. Winter nights are mild, and a long-sleeve set plus a shawl usually covers it. See winter loungewear for Karachi
- Lahore and Islamabad: useful through December to February, particularly in the mornings and in unheated rooms
- Northern areas and hill stations: genuinely worth having
- Anyone who feels the cold, or works in a heavily air-conditioned office year-round
How do you layer thermals properly?
Three layers: base, insulation, outer. Each has a job.
- Base (thermals): close to the skin, moves moisture away, traps warm air
- Insulation: a sweater, cardigan or fleece — the layer that actually holds heat
- Outer: a coat or shawl to block wind
The mistake is skipping the base and piling on thick outer layers, which is bulkier and less warm. A thin thermal under a normal kurta often beats a heavy sweater on its own.
What should you look for?
- Close but not tight. Thermals work by sitting against the skin; loose ones lose the trapped air
- Flat seams, because you'll wear them all day under other clothes
- A breathable blend. Pure synthetic traps sweat, which then makes you cold — a cotton or modal blend is more comfortable indoors
- Skin tone or black, so nothing shows at the neck or cuff under fine fabric
What do you wear under thermals?
Normal underwear and a comfortable bra — thermals go over, not instead. A soft, seam-free set is most comfortable under a close base layer.
Seamless styles avoid ridges showing through a fitted thermal. Our Smooth Operator seamless 7-pack sits flat, and the full-coverage Comfy Classic boyshorts add a little warmth of their own. A soft wireless bra like Blossom Beauty is the most comfortable under layers.
Does Erblis sell thermals?
No — we stock underwear, bras and loungewear rather than thermal base layers. This guide is here to help you choose well wherever you buy them.
What we do have for the cooler months is full-length loungewear: the three-piece Plush Reverie and Chic Serenity sets include long-sleeve tops and trousers for cold evenings at home. Browse the sleep and lounge collection.
Frequently asked questions
Do you need thermals in Karachi?
Usually not. Karachi winters are mild enough that a long-sleeve set and a shawl cover most nights. They are more useful in Lahore, Islamabad and the north.
What do you wear thermals under?
Under your normal clothes — a kurta, shalwar kameez, trousers or jeans. They are a base layer, designed to be invisible.
Are thermals bulky?
Good ones are not. They work by trapping warm air against the skin, not by being thick, so a well-made set adds warmth without changing your outline.
Does Erblis deliver in Karachi?
Yes, with free delivery across Karachi, Cash on Delivery, and a free tote bag with every order.
