Ladies undergarments cover six things: the bra, which shapes and supports; the panty, which is the everyday base; the camisole or inner, which gives coverage under fine fabric; the slip, which stops cling and transparency on skirts and dresses; shapewear, which smooths under fitted outfits; and the thermal base layer for winter. Most women need the first three. The rest depend on what you wear.
In Pakistan these are usually called undergarments rather than lingerie, and they are bought as a system rather than one piece at a time — because that is how they are actually worn. A kurta in fine lawn needs a bra and an inner; a fitted gharara needs a bra, shapewear and often a slip. This guide walks through each piece, what it is for, and when you need it.
1. The bra
What it does: supports and shapes, and determines how everything you wear over it sits.
The band does most of the support work, not the straps, which is why fit is almost entirely a band question. The style you need depends on the outfit: a smooth moulded bra under fine fabric, a plunge under a deep neckline, a full-cup for the most support, and a soft wireless one for comfort at home.

2. The panty
What it does: the everyday base layer, and the piece most responsible for day-to-day comfort.
The two things that matter are a cotton gusset — non-negotiable in Karachi's humidity — and elastic that recovers after washing. The cut you choose depends on what goes over it: full-coverage briefs or boyshorts for everyday and loose clothing, seamless or minimal cuts under anything fitted where a line would show.

3. The camisole (the inner)
What it does: provides coverage and a smooth layer under fine lawn, chiffon, net and light-coloured kurtas.
This is the piece most specific to how people actually dress in Pakistan, and the one most often missing from Western guides. A camisole means your outer fabric is not doing all the work — a fine lawn kurta that looks sheer on its own looks entirely opaque over a well-chosen inner.
Choose one in a shade close to your skin rather than white, which shows through light fabric more than nude does. Full detail: what is a camisole, and the best undergarments under a kurta or lawn suit.
4. The slip
What it does: stops a skirt, dress or long kameez clinging to your legs, and adds a layer of opacity.
A slip is a camisole's lower-body equivalent — a smooth underlayer worn beneath skirts, dresses and longer kameez. It solves two problems at once: static cling, which is worse on synthetic fabrics, and transparency in bright sunlight, which catches people out constantly.
Under a saree, the petticoat does this job, though shapewear is increasingly used instead. Full detail in slips and inner skirts: what to wear under skirts and dresses, plus saree shapewear vs petticoat and what to wear under a saree or formal shalwar kameez.
5. Shapewear
What it does: smooths the line of a fitted outfit. It is occasion wear, not everyday wear.
Shapewear earns its place under heavily fitted clothing — a fitted gharara, a tailored outfit for a function, a close-cut dress. It is not meant for all-day daily use, and the size you buy should be your actual size rather than one down, which is the most common and most uncomfortable mistake.
See types of shapewear explained and how to choose your shapewear size.
6. The thermal base layer
What it does: adds warmth without bulk in winter.
In Karachi this is a short season and many people skip it entirely. Further north it genuinely matters, and the right approach is a thin close-fitting layer worn under normal clothes rather than more layers on top. See thermal innerwear for a Pakistani winter.
What undergarments do you actually need?
Stripped back to essentials:
- Everyone: well-fitting everyday bras, enough everyday panties that laundry is never urgent, and a couple of camisoles in nude.
- If you wear fine lawn, chiffon or light colours: add more camisoles, a nude slip, and seamless panties in a nude tone.
- If you wear fitted or formal outfits: add shapewear, plus a smooth strapless or convertible bra.
- If you attend functions and weddings: a convertible bra earns its place, since it covers several necklines with one piece.

How do you layer undergarments under Pakistani clothing?
The general rule is that each layer should be smoother than the one above it. Bra first, then panty, then camisole or slip, then the outer garment — with shapewear sitting between panty and camisole when you are wearing it.
Colour matters more than most people expect. Under white and light fabric, nude disappears and white shows. Under dark fabric, anything works. See what to wear under white clothes.
Where should you buy undergarments?
Brand outlets if you need to be fitted, local markets for the cheapest basics, online for range and privacy. See where to buy bras and underwear in Karachi for the trade-offs, and our honest brand comparison for which brand suits which need.
How do you care for undergarments so they last?
Wash cool, skip fabric softener, never tumble dry, and rotate so elastic can recover between wears. Heat is what kills elastic, and elastic is what you paid for. See how to care for lingerie so it lasts longer and why underwear gets discoloured.

Frequently asked questions
What are ladies undergarments?
Undergarments are the garments worn under clothing: bras, panties, camisoles or inners, slips, shapewear and thermal base layers. In Pakistan the word is used interchangeably with innerwear.
What is the difference between undergarments and lingerie?
In practice, undergarments describes everyday functional pieces, while lingerie tends to describe decorative or occasion pieces. They overlap heavily and many garments are both.
What is a camisole used for?
A camisole, often called an inner, is worn under fine lawn, chiffon, net and light-coloured kurtas to add coverage and a smooth layer so the outer fabric is not sheer.
Do you need a slip under a kameez?
Under a long or light-coloured kameez, yes — a slip prevents cling and stops the fabric going transparent in bright sunlight. Under heavier or darker fabric it is optional.
How many sets of undergarments should you own?
Around three to four bras in rotation, ten to fourteen panties, and two or three camisoles. Rotation matters as much as quantity, because elastic needs rest between wears.
What undergarments are best for Pakistan's heat?
Breathable cotton or modal with a cotton gusset, in light layers. Avoid all-synthetic pieces in summer, which trap heat and moisture against the skin.
