Period Underwear: What It Is and Whether It Works in the Heat
by Erblis on Oct 27, 2026
Period underwear is absorbent underwear with a built-in layered gusset, worn on its own or as backup. It works, but in Pakistan's heat and humidity the practical obstacle is drying it properly between uses — which is why most people here use it alongside other protection rather than instead of it. Here is an honest look.
This guide is part of our complete guide to women's underwear in Pakistan. For the wider question, see what to wear on your period.
How does period underwear work?
A multi-layer gusset absorbs and holds liquid, with a leak-resistant outer layer. It's built into the underwear rather than added to it.
Typically there's a wicking layer against the skin, an absorbent core, and a barrier layer outside. Capacity varies a lot between products — some hold the equivalent of a light pad, others considerably more.
Does it actually work?
Yes, within its stated capacity — and that's the part to pay attention to. It is not unlimited.
For light days, overnight backup, or as a second line of defence alongside a pad or cup, it performs well. For a heavy day used alone, you'd need to change during the day, which means carrying a used pair with you.
What are the honest limits in Pakistan's climate?
Washing and drying, more than performance. This is the practical catch nobody mentions.
- Drying time. Multi-layer gussets take a long time to dry, and in monsoon humidity they may not dry fully in a day. Damp underwear isn't an option
- Breathability. The leak-resistant layer doesn't breathe, so it's warmer than ordinary cotton on a hot day
- Rinsing. They need a cold rinse before washing, which takes a little organising in a shared household
- Cost per pair, and you need several for a cycle
See underwear for monsoon humidity, where the same drying problem comes up.
How many pairs would you need?
At least three to five to get through a cycle, more if drying is slow. One pair is not a system.
You need enough to cover each day with pairs still drying. In a humid month, allow more than you'd think.
What else works on period days?
Full-coverage cotton underwear in a dark colour, worn with your usual protection. Simple, breathable and cheap.
More coverage holds a pad securely in place and feels more secure overall. Our full-coverage high-rise Comfy Classic boyshorts are a practical choice, and a dark colour means no anxiety about stains. See boyshorts: when to wear them and high-waisted underwear.
Many people keep a few dedicated darker pairs for period days as part of the drawer — see building a capsule underwear drawer.
Does Erblis sell period underwear?
No — we stock ordinary underwear, bras and loungewear. This guide is here to help you decide either way.
What we do have for period days is full-coverage, breathable cotton-gusset underwear in darker shades. Browse the underwear collection.
Frequently asked questions
Does period underwear really work?
Yes, up to its stated absorbency. It works well for light days and as backup; for heavy days used alone you'd need to change during the day.
Is period underwear practical in Pakistan's humidity?
The performance is fine; the difficulty is drying. Multi-layer gussets dry slowly, and in monsoon humidity they may not dry fully overnight, so you need several pairs.
How many pairs do you need?
At least three to five for a cycle, and more if things dry slowly where you live.
What is the best underwear for your period?
Full-coverage cotton in a dark colour, which holds protection securely and breathes well. Boyshorts and high-waisted briefs are the usual choices.
Does Erblis deliver in Karachi?
Yes, with free delivery across Karachi, Cash on Delivery, discreet packaging, and a free tote bag with every order.
